Breastpumps

You can use the Haakaa pump either as a manual breastpump or as a milk catcher.

Use as pump:

  1. Sterilize your pump by boiling in water or steam for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Place the pump flange over your nipple – make sure your nipple is centred comfortably in the neck of the pump.
  3. Apply suction – you may need to adjust the position of your pump a couple of times. Once the pump is secure and comfortable, apply suction by squeezing the base of the pump to start the flow of milk.
  4. Once milk begins to flow, simply leave the pump alone to do its thing!
  5. When the pump is full, empty into a glass storage bottle and reposition.

Tips:

  • Encourage letdown by placing a warm flannel on top of your breast and massaging gently.
  • You can also use two pumps, one on each breast, simultaneously.
  • Squeeze the pump rhythmically as if your baby was suckling

Use as milk catcher:

  • While your child is feeding, attach your Haakaa pump to the other breast to catch precious milk that would otherwise be lost in a nursing pad.

Breastfeeding Nipple Shield

The Haakaa breastfeeding nipple shield is one-of-a-kind since it a) is longer than regular nipple shields and b) is attached with suction.

  1. Thanks to more space between the nipple and the baby's mouth you can also nurse with cracked and hurting nipples or if your bub bites or pulls away frequently.
  2. Thanks to the suction the nipple shield not only stays in place but also draws out the milk of your breast, so that it is a little easier for your bub to drink.

Here is a beautiful story of how our nipple shield helped a preemie to learn how to breastfeed ❤️

Instagram post by @ritualrights

"[...] Then I discovered the haakaa nipple shield. Why hadn’t anyone told me about this?
Like the pump it suctions onto your nipple which transfers the milk and collects it at the tip where baby easily transfers from there, thank you universe! I turned my breast into the ultimate preemie feeding system. My baby isn’t getting drowned by my letdown or the bottle, her self pacing is great and I no longer have to supplement her oral feeds with a gavage. I didn’t mean for this post to turn into an advertisement for haakaa but I really want to share this little piece of gold for anyone else that may be facing a similar issue. Seeking alternative solutions and not accepting the status quo isn’t frustration, it’s parenting.
Fed is best, ALWAYS; but, there are options out there for those of us who really want to breastfeed our children and for some reason or another are having a challenging time."
